Creative Autonomy: A Conversation About Making Art on Your Own Terms

There’s something quietly powerful about choosing to keep showing up. This month, I recorded the second episode of Circle Conversations, and the theme was one that’s deeply personal to me, creative autonomy. What it means to make art on your own terms, even when life is full.
I sat down with someone incredibly special: the person who wrote the foreword to my first published book, and who, these days, holds me accountable not just to create, but to believe in what I’m making. We’ve made it a practice to remind each other that our voices matter. That showing up even imperfectly, is still showing up. This conversation was so much fun. We talked about resisting outside pressure, staying true to your voice, and reimagining what creative freedom looks like when you’re juggling multiple roles. Her thoughtful and honest insight is the kind of voice I think more people need to hear. And even though we’ve been having these kinds of conversations for years, I still found myself nervous before we hit record. But there was also joy. Ease. And pride. Because every time I push myself to record an episode, I feel myself getting a little more comfortable in front of the camera even though I’ve always loved being behind it.
I don’t have metrics in mind. No dream number of subscribers. What I do want is for anyone who listens to feel inspired. And for the people sitting across from me, my guests and my friends, to walk away feeling seen, sparked, and creatively energized. Moments like these remind me that I’m in the middle of a personal metamorphosis. And I’m so grateful for it.
